Headline annual inflation in the Eurozone bounced back to the target rate of the European Central Bank, a shift likely to lower the likelihood of a half-point rate cut in December.
The EU statistics office Eurostat said Thursday that its initial estimate for headline annual consumer price growth in the euro area in September fell in line with market forecasts to 2.0%, up from 1.7% in September.
The increase brought the rate back to the ECB target – 2.0% over the medium term – and the reading was just above the market expectation of 1.9%.
The Eurozone core inflation rate, which excludes volatile items such as energy, this month held at 2.7% and above the market forecast of 2.6%
The Eurostat report said services remained the main driver of price growth with at 3.9% y/y, matching the mark from September.
Energy prices declined at an annual rate of 4.6%, according to the data.
September’s monthly inflation rate jumped to 0.3% compared to the 0.2% estimate and -0.1% last month. Unprocessed food was up 2.1% on the month.
“The slight uptick in Eurozone inflation in October was expected following the base effect-driven dip in September,” Rory Fennessy from Oxford Economics wrote, “Core inflation ticked up marginally with the wage-intensive services component holding steady.”
Price rebound to undercut calls for large ECB rate cut
Data from three of the four largest economies in the Eurozone had indicated a rise in consumer price growth for the currency area as a whole.
Preliminary annual readings from Germany released Wednesday showed a surge in the annual EU harmonised inflation rate to 2.4%, which compared to an estimate of 2.1% and 1.8% in September.
The unexpectedly strong jump in inflation in Europe’s largest economy, and the surprise growth there in the third quarter, has likely emboldened ECB hawks, according to ING’s Carsten Brzeski, who noted that the data points “should hush the 50bp rate cut debate.”
On Thursday morning, France contributed to the cause by announcing an in-line increase in its headline rate to 1.5% from 1.4% last month.
Italy said Friday that its EU harmonised rate rose to 1.0%, which outpaced the 0.8% estimate and 0.7% in September.
On Wednesday, Spain reported that its preliminary annual price growth increased a tenth to 1.8%, which was also the estimate.
The future looks bright for lower borrowing costs, Oxford’s Fennessy predicted. “Given weak underlying growth dynamics, we think inflation will undershoot ECB forecasts next year and allow for a sustained pace of rate cuts in H1 2025.”
