Euro area economic growth in the third quarter displayed surprising resilience thanks to an unexpected improvement in the region’s largest economy that boosted the overall number for the currency zone.
In a preliminary report, the EU statistics office Eurostat said Eurozone GDP expanded 0.4% q/q in the July-September period. This beat the market forecast of 0.2%, which was also the value for Q2 growth. Compared to the third quarter of last year, the Eurozone economy grew 0.9% versus the estimate of 0.8% and the 0.6% increase last quarter.
Germany surprised the market and economists with a preliminary GDP increase of 0.2% q/q versus expectations of a 0.1% decline. However, the Q2 reading was adjusted to a contraction of 0.3% from 0.1% of shrinkage.
Spain remains one of the few bright spots in the European growth picture. It said Q3 GDP grew a preliminary 0.8% q/q, which matched the Q2 rate and outpaced the estimate of 0.6%. On the year, GDP was up 3.4% versus the estimate of 3.0%.
France turned in a better result than expected, with an initial report saying Q3 GDP expanded 0.4% q/q, which was better than both the 0.3% estimate and the 0.2% reading in Q2.
Italy was the laggard for the big four economies in the Eurozone, with its initial Q3 report of flat growth in the period versus the previous quarter. This compared to expectations for a 0.2% rise, the result in the second quarter.
Following the announcement of the German and Italian numbers, traders lowered their bets on the ECB’s December move to a 22% chance of 50-basis point cut from around 45% prior to the data. At least two members of the bank’s governing council had suggested that the public lender could cut up half a point at the end of the year, but the unexpected rise in German GDP likely eliminated the urgency or even necessity of a large rate cut in the minds of market players.
Only a brief respite?
Franziska Palmas from Capital Economics wrote that the stronger-than-expected improvement “was partly due to a 2.0% q/q expansion in Ireland, where the data are extremely volatile, and a boost from the Paris Olympics of around 0.04 percentage points. But even excluding those GDP growth would have still been around 0.3%, a faster pace than the 0.2% q/q expansion in Q2.”
Despite the unanticipated economic strength, observers were still cautious about the road ahead. “Eurozone GDP growth is likely to slow in Q4,“ Palmas noted. “Next year, we think structural headwinds and fiscal tightening will offset most of the boost to the Eurozone economy from monetary easing and recovering real incomes.”
Thus concerns about economic weakness in Europe are set to continue. The latest example comes in the form of difficult labour talks between union leaders and management at German carmaker Volkswagen, which began Wednesday amid reports the company plans to close three domestic factories – it has yet to shutter a local shops in its 87-year history. VW unit Audi announced Tuesday that it would close its Brussels car factory at the end of February 2025.
