Headline annual inflation in the Eurozone dropped below the target of the European Central Bank, a shift expected to add support for the year’s third interest rate reduction from the public lender later this month.
The EU statistics office Eurostat said its initial estimate for headline annual consumer price growth in the euro area in September fell in line with market forecasts to 1.8% from 2.2% in August, pushing it well below the ECB target of 2.0% over the medium term.
The market had adjusted its expectations lower after surprising large declines in consumer price growth in some Eurozone member states over the past few days.
The Eurozone core inflation rate, which excludes volatile items such as energy, ticked lower to 2.7%, a mark short of the market forecast of 2.8%, which was also the result in August.
The Eurostat report said services remained the main driver of price growth with a one-tenth decline to 4.0% y/y. The measure has been holding at or above 4% since May.
Energy prices declined at an annual rate of 6%, according to the data.
September’s monthly inflation rate fell to -0.1% versus the market forecast of 0.0% and 0.1% last month. Energy prices tumbled 1.6% from August, and service prices eased at a monthly rate of 1.0%.
The ECB cut rates 25 basis points last month after announcing a like move in June, and analysts expect the latest slowdown in price growth to bring two more cuts this year: one later this month and another in December.
Michael Brown from Pepperstone wrote, “With price pressures cooling more rapidly than expected, and with the recent round of PMI surveys pointing to a sharp loss of economic momentum in September, coupled with lingering downside economic risks, the stars are all aligned for the data-dependent governing council to pull the trigger on another rate cut, just five weeks after the previous policy meeting.”
Inflation slows significantly in most major member states
Data from the four largest economies in the Eurozone pointed to declines in consumer price growth for the currency area as a whole.
Preliminary annual readings from Germany released Monday showed an EU harmonised inflation rate of 1.8%, lower than both the 1.9% estimate and the 2.0% mark announced for August.
Italy said Monday that its EU harmonised rate dropped an in-line 0.8% this month from 1.2% in August.
On Friday, France announced a sharp drop in its initial headline rate to 1.5% versus 2.2% last month and a consensus of 1.9%. Also on Friday, Spain said its preliminary annual price growth tumbled to 1.7% to come in under the market estimate of 1.9% and 2.4% in August.
