Headline consumer price growth in the euro area last month extended its push beneath the target of the European Central Bank, which is expected to hold its interest rates at current levels Thursday and beyond.
In a preliminary report, the EU statistics office Eurostat said annual Eurozone inflation last month dropped to 1.7% – the market estimate – from December’s 1.9%. This pushed the measure well below the ECB’s medium-term target of 2.0%.
The less-volatile euro area core rate eased to 2.2% y/y – a four-year low – from 2.3%, the December reading and the market forecast.
Measured at a monthly rate, consumer prices in January declined 0.5%, as predicted, following a rise of 0.2% in December.
EUR/USD threatened to move below 1.18 overnight and flirted with that mark following the report.
“It’s a day before the ECB rate decision and Eurozone inflation just dropped to 1.7%,” wrote Bert Colijn from ING. “That sounds more exciting than it is, as base effects in energy have done a lot of the heavy lifting here. Prices at the pump have actually been rising in recent weeks, despite the weaker US dollar.”
Price growth for fresh food jumped nearly a percentage point to 4.4% y/y in January and increased 1.7% on the month, according to Eurostat. Service inflation slipped two-tenths to 3.4% y/y and slid 0.3% from December. The drop in energy prices more than double to 4.1% y/y but showed a 0.7% increase from the previous month.
The bank’s cutting cycle, which began in June of 2024, is likely over, according to the majority of ECB observers. Some predict officials will first begin to alter policy again in 2027, and that will be to raise rates.
January’s inflation slowdown could stoke discussions about rate reductions at the bank’s Frankfurt headquarters. “While we don’t expect a cut, this will add fuel to the more dovish debates around the table at the ECB’s governing council meeting,” Colijn explained.
Consumer price eases in most of Eurozone Big Four
Europe’s biggest economies reported largely weaker price growth last month, with Germany surprising to the upside Friday as its EU-harmonised annual inflation rate rising to 2.1%, a tenth more than the forecast and the reading in the previous month. Earlier that day, Spain reported a five-tenth decline in its headline reading to 2.5%, a tenth higher than estimates.
On Tuesday, France announced its initial estimate of headline inflation at 0.4%, which was below January’s 0.7% and the 0.6% forecast.
Italy said Wednesday that consumer price growth eased two-tenths to 1.0%, which outpaced 0.8% estimate.
