Global markets face a pivotal week as policymakers confront a rapidly shifting macro backdrop shaped by the recent surge in energy prices and heightened geopolitical tensions following the escalation of conflict in the Middle East.
A packed central bank schedule dominates proceedings with decisions across the US, UK, eurozone, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Sweden and Brazil. The Trump administration as soon as this week plans to announce that multiple countries have agreed to form a coalition that will escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which runs along the Iranian coast, U.S. officials said. They are still discussing, however, whether those operations would begin before or after hostilities end.
The White House declined to comment on the expected announcement, which could shift depending on battlefield conditions. Publicly, many countries have been noncommittal to such an escort mission until hostilities cease, given the risks involved.
In a Sunday joint statement, the foreign ministers of the U.K. and members of the Gulf Cooperation Council -- a body representing the interests of six countries in the Gulf region -- said GCC states “have the right to take all necessary measures to defend their security and stability and protect their territories, citizens and residents.” (WSJ – Continue Reading)
China’s main economic indicators fared better than forecast to start the year, in a sign that momentum was improving before the war in Iran roiled the outlook for global growth and inflation.
Industrial production climbed 6.3% in the January-February period from a year ago its fastest growth since September and up from 5.2% in December. Fixed-asset investment unexpectedly expanded 1.8%, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday, after contracting for the first time on record in 2025.
