Pakistan and Qatar have presented a compromise proposal aimed at bridging differences between US and Iran, with both sides reportedly giving preliminary approval to the plan, sources told news outlet Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, accoridng to Arab media and other media reports.
Earlier, Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran for high-level talks with Iranian officials in what appears to be a last-ditch effort by Islamabad to end the ongoing war in West Asia and prevent further escalation of the conflict.
U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff will offer Vladimir Putin direct talks with President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an effort to secure a ceasefire.
The proposal for three-way leaders’ negotiations on a peace proposal, which would be the first such summit since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, was announced at a press conference following talks in Norway between Zelenskyy and Witkoff on Tuesday.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who hosted the talks, said Witkoff will travel to Russia Wednesday and set out proposals for peace terms, including the idea of a three-way summit between the leaders. The meeting in Oslo came after days of high tensions between Ukraine and the U.S. president.
The Trump administration is being sued over the president’s imposition of 50% tariffs on an array of Canadian goods.
The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday, comes amid an ongoing trade war between the US and one of its largest trading partners. The food import business that sued argues President Donald Trump lacked authority to invoke a never-before-used section of US law to order the levies against Canada and that this is part of a broader trend of illegal taxing actions by the administration.
The European Commission has ruled out reopening its free trade agreement with Australia, putting it on a collision course with Australia’s Coalition opposition that is threatening to block the deal in the Senate.
“The EU has the world’s largest network of free trade agreements. We invest years in getting these deals right, ensuring they are balanced, ambitious and offer benefits for both us and our partners,” Commission trade spokesperson Olof Gill told POLITICO. “Once negotiations are done, they are done.”
Gill was asked whether Brussels would return to the table if the deal could not get the backing it needs in the Australian Senate. He said the Commission aims to propose the agreement for signature and conclusion in early 2027.
