U.S. shoppers spent $14.25 billion on Cyber Monday, pushing total online sales over the Thanksgiving weekend to $44.2 billion, according to an Adobe Analytics report, as consumers lapped up offers on everything from gadgets to household essentials.
Spending rose 7.7% during the so-called Cyber Week - the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday - compared with an 8.2% increase to $41.1 billion last year, the report added. At the beginning of the holidays, Adobe had projected online spending for the period this year to hit $43.7 billion, up 6.3% from a year earlier.
"U.S. retailers leaned heavily on discounts this holiday season to drive online demand. Competitive and persistent deals throughout Cyber Week pushed consumers to shop earlier, creating an environment where Black Friday now challenges the dominance of Cyber Monday," said Vivek Pandya, lead analyst at Adobe Digital Insights.
Traders in US futures markets are gaming out a wide range of policy paths as they weigh the prospect of a Donald Trump–backed Federal Reserve chair and a raft of delayed data that could reshape the economic outlook.
Investors have been piling into short-term curve structures linked to the Secured Overnight Financing Rate, which closely tracks perceived outcomes of Fed interest rate decisions. The new positions, favoring more interest rate cuts in 2026, started to build after White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Jerome Powell at the helm of the central bank.
Futures activity picked up Monday after Trump said over the weekend that he has decided on his pick. He said Tuesday that he will announce the new chair “early next year.”
Forecasters are warning of a possible “triple whammy” of risks for the dollar in the coming weeks that could worsen what’s already a seasonally weak period for the currency.
The greenback might be hurt by a possible US Supreme Court ruling that tariffs are illegal and the potential selection of White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett as Federal Reserve chairman, according to Standard Bank. There’s also the prospect of a jump in the yen if Japan raises interest rates this month, the firm says.
Deutsche Bank AG also sees scope for a Japanese rate increase, as well as firmer economic data in other countries knocking the dollar during the year-end period.
A major asset manager is exploring a strategic entry into the Bitcoin lending market, signaling a potential shift in institutional crypto adoption. The move, if executed, would leverage the firm's existing client base and infrastructure to generate yield on crypto holdings. The nascent market faces regulatory uncertainty and operational hurdles, but growing institutional custody solutions are lowering barriers.
A prominent asset manager with significant institutional reach is actively considering a strategic foray into Bitcoin-backed lending, according to people familiar with the internal discussions. While no final decision has been made, the exploration points to a maturing phase for crypto financial services, where traditional finance giants see viable revenue streams beyond simple holding or trading.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has set off a “code red” alert to employees to improve its flagship product, ChatGPT, and delay other product developments, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper reported that Altman sent an internal memo to staff Monday saying more work was needed to enhance the artificial intelligence chatbot's speed, reliability and personalization features.
This week marks three years since OpenAI first released ChatGPT, sparking global fascination and a commercial boom in generative AI technology and giving the San Francisco-based startup an early lead. But the company faces increased competition with rivals, including Google, which last month unleashed Gemini 3, the latest version of its own AI assistant.
