Foreign capital is flooding into Wall Street courtesy of the AI revolution. Paradoxically, however, this is intensifying the spotlight on America's chronic external deficit. How long can this massive imbalance last?
Investors around the world have poured trillions into the U.S. stock market in recent years, lured by the juicy returns promised by the artificial intelligence boom, which has spurred the biggest capex spending spree in history. This flow of overseas money into U.S. equities is now the key funding source for the U.S. current account deficit, which has widened beyond pre-pandemic levels.
Oliver Blume has a bold plan to rev up Volkswagen's (VOWG.DE), opens new tab sputtering engine. The CEO of the €37 bln carmaker aims to halve its model range, shut factories and slash costs, including 100,000 jobs. The hope is this can double its lacklustre operating margin even if sales plateau. Yet, the German company’s most recent results, opens new tab point to a rapidly deteriorating and unpredictable car sector, that might make even Blume's targets harder to reach.
Oil prices popped to $100 a barrel on Thursday, as Iran’s Houthi proxies in Yemen bombed oil tankers to hold another global shipping lane hostage. Iran is trying to compound the economic costs on President Trump, figuring he can’t take the political heat.
The Houthis claim to have hit two Saudi oil tankers, but don’t buy the terrorist spin that they’re merely targeting the Saudis in a long-running war. The Houthis are a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tehran. Iran is playing this card now because they know Mr. Trump is sensitive to rising oil and gas prices, especially as the November elections near.
